About Paul Robeson
Paul Robeson (1898–1976) was a groundbreaking figure of the 20th century—an athlete, actor, singer, scholar, and political activist. Born in Princeton, New Jersey, he excelled academically and athletically, earning a law degree before turning to the arts. Robeson became famous for his roles in theater, particularly as Othello, and his iconic performances of songs like "Ol' Man River." He used his fame to advocate for civil rights, social justice, and anti-colonialism, earning admiration worldwide.
Despite facing racial prejudice, he broke barriers in American theater and film. Robeson’s activism, including support for black nationalism and anti-fascism, led to persecution during the McCarthy era. His passport was revoked, stalling his career, but he continued performing abroad after it was reinstated. Later years brought…
